The Story
A child killer turns an entire city against itself in Fritz Lang's first sound film.
As Hans Beckert stalks the children of Berlin, whistling his eerie tune, police dragnets so disrupt the underworld that the criminals mount their own manhunt to be rid of the heat. A blind balloon-seller recognizes the murderer's whistle, and a chalked letter on his coat marks him for capture. Seized by the mob and dragged before a kangaroo court, Beckert pleads that he cannot stop himself, leaving the crowd, and the audience, to weigh compulsion against justice.
