The Story
In a poor Bengal village, a small boy's world is built from sunlight, sweets, and the wonder of a passing train.
Satyajit Ray's luminous debut follows the family of the dreaming priest Harihar, his careworn wife Sarbajaya, the spirited daughter Durga, and young Apu as they scrape by alongside an aged aunt. Between everyday joys and quiet hardships, the father leaves to seek work in the city as the monsoon gathers on the horizon. One of the towering achievements of world cinema, and the film that began the Apu Trilogy.
