The Story
The middle chapter of Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy follows a boy's passage from a sacred city to the wider world.
After his father, a priest in Benares, falls ill, young Apu and his widowed mother Sarbajaya return to a Bengal village, where the boy's hunger for learning wins him a scholarship in distant Calcutta. As Apu is drawn deeper into books and city life, the quiet distance between him and his lonely mother widens with every parting. A tender, aching portrait of ambition and the ties it strains.
