The Story
Stranded in an Italian port, a band of swindlers and a lying English couple circle a fortune in African land.
John Huston's deadpan spoof of intrigue strands Billy Dannreuther among four con men plotting to seize uranium-rich territory, with only a broken-down ship between them and their prize. As Billy drifts into an affair with the fantasist Gwendolen and her tall tales rattle the gang, a car crash, a shipwreck, and an arrest scatter the schemers. By the time the dust settles, it is the supposedly hapless husband who walks away with the land and the money.
